What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is very common but is not well understood. Actually, “arthritis” is not a single disease; it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions. Common arthritis joint symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion.

Arthritis most often affecting the hip, knee, spine or other weight-bearing joints, but also found in the fingers and other non-weight-bearing joints. Some forms of arthritis can also affect other parts of the body like heart, eyes, lungs, kidneys and skin.

Types:

There are around 200 types of arthritis, or musculoskeletal conditions. These are split into seven main groups:

  1. Inflammatory arthritis
  2. Degenerative or mechanical arthritis
  3. Soft tissue musculoskeletal pain
  4. Back pain
  5. Connective tissue disease
  6. Infectious arthritis
  7. Metabolic arthritis.

Two Main Types Of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis, also referred to as the “wear-and-tear” arthritis. OA leads to the breakdown of cartilage (the tough elastic material that covers and protects the ends of bones), and the resulting bone-on-bone contact can cause pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced range of movement in the affected joint(s). The joints most commonly affected by OA are the knees, hips and those in the hands and spine.

There are many factors that are thought to contribute to developing OA, such as age, obesity, your sex, occupation, participation in certain sports, history of joint injury or surgery, and genetics.

Inflammatory arthritis (IA)

Inflammatory forms of arthritis are different from osteoarthritis, in that the source of joint damage is from inflammation rather a wearing away of your cartilage. Most forms of IA are also autoimmune diseases, where the immune system – the body’s defense system against infections and other invaders – mistakenly starts to attack the body’s own healthy tissues.

Inflammation from these conditions can result in pain, stiffness, restricted mobility, fatigue and damage to joints and other tissues. If not identified and treated swiftly, these conditions tend to progress more quickly and aggressively than OA.

1. Oily fish: Oily fish contain lots of healthful omega-3 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fats have anti-inflammatory properties so they may benefit people with osteoarthritis.

4. Dark leafy greens: Dark leafy greens are rich in Vitamin D and stress-fighting phytochemicals and antioxidants. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and can also boost the immune system, helping the body to fight off infection.

5. Broccoli: Broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which researchers believe could slow the progression of osteoarthritis. This vegetable is also rich in vitamins K and C, as well as bone-strengthening calcium.

6. Green tea: Polyphenols are antioxidants that experts believe may be able to reduce inflammation and slow the rate of cartilage damage. Green tea contains high levels of polyphenols.

7. Garlic: Scientists believe that a compound called diallyl disulfide that occurs in garlic may work against the enzymes in the body that damage cartilage.

8. Nuts: Nuts are good for the heart and contain high levels of calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E, and fiber. They also contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which boosts the immune system.

It is not possible for specific foods to cure osteoarthritis, but, according to the Arthritis Foundation, certain diets can improve people’s symptoms.
